Sandy Hook Lighthouse. Located near the northern end of the Sandy Hook Peninsula, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse operating in the United States. The lighthouse and the original keeper"s quarters were constructed sometime between 1763 and 1764. It was referred to as the New York Lighthouse and was lighted for the first time on June 11 1764. Today the lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a navigational aid. The keeper"s house and the surrounding property area part of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreational Area.
